Clean beauty refers to beauty products that are free from toxic substances. Additionally, clean beauty should be ethically sourced and contain clean, safe, science-backed ingredients.

It all comes down to science when considering why clean beauty matters. Therefore, several studies have examined the chemicals in cosmetic products and their effects on the human body. 

Consequently, many chemicals found in beauty products are known endocrine (hormone) disruptors. An endocrine disruptor is a chemical (both natural and man-made) that interferes with the body’s hormones. Unfortunately, chemicals that mess with our hormones are linked to increased risks of birth defects, cancer, obesity, insulin resistance, and other health issues.

Two well-known endocrine disruptors are parabans and phthalates. 

Phthalates are a class of plasticizing chemicals used to make products more pliable or to make fragrances stick to skin.

The HERMOSA study, led by Dr. Harley, investigated exposure levels to these two chemicals through cosmetic usage.  Not surprisingly, the study found a significant drop in the levels of phthalates and parabens in the participants once they changed to lower chemical cosmetic products.
